Credit Card Negotiations

If you cannot afford your monthly credit card payments, you are not alone.  In this tough economy many people have been forced to use their credit cards just to make ends meet. Most likely if you are in this situation you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed with little hope of ever paying off your credit card debt.

Once balances are incurred it is easy for the credit card debt to quickly sky rocket as it is not uncommon for interest rates to be as high as 15% to 30%.   These high interest rates make it difficult, if not impossible, for some borrowers to pay down their credit card debt.  Fortunately, for people in this situation credit card relief may be available through a credit card negotiation.

There are several ways that a credit card modification can be utilized. Credit card negotiation is the process of negotiating with your credit card company to negotiate a partial settlement, a workout agreement, a temporary forbearance program, or reduction in monthly payment.

Credit card negotiation is an alternative to bankruptcy.   Many people think that if they can't afford to pay off their credit cards in full, then their only alternative is to file bankruptcy.  However, a credit card negotiation may be a way to avoid bankruptcy.  There are mutual benefits for the borrower and the credit card company to work together to resolve an outstanding credit card balance.

Credit card companies don't want borrowers to file bankruptcy.  Credit card debt is unsecured debt and if a borrower files bankruptcy they will most likely receive nothing.   Thus, it is in their best interest to get something, instead of nothing.  Similarly, most borrowers do not want to file bankruptcy, as they are concerned about damaging their credit score.  Thus, a credit card negotiation can be the best alternative for both parties.

Additionally, in some cases borrowers may not qualify for a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy under the federal bankruptcy guidelines.  Further, some borrowers may only qualify for a Chapter 13 bankruptcy and don't want to be under the bankruptcy court's supervision for 3 to 5 years under a payment plan.  Thus, in some cases, a credit card negotiation may be the only option available or better alternative to bankruptcy for a debtor.

Credit card negotiations can be attempted directly by the debtor.  However, credit card negotiations can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months and can be an arduous, intimidating and stressful task.  Therefore, it is well worth the investment to hire a professional with the experience and know how, to perform the negotiations on your behalf.
